Columns, SMT Normal Phase Silica HPLC

  Overview

SMT Normal Phase Silica HPLC Columns perform well to separate many polar compounds such as pesticides and organic acids

When chromatographic separation is done in a normal phase mode the surface chemistry of the stationary phase has a polar characteristic, while the mobile phase is usually a nonpolar organic solvent. The lack of flexibility in polarity led to less use of normal phase mode. Continuous advancement in surface modification has generated new interest in normal phase chromatography. Some separations are achieved more conveniently using normal mode.

SMT Normal Phase Silica HPLC Columns use silica as the substrate. Metal impurities in silica may provide additional sites of interaction for solutes of interest. The silica used in the SMT Normal Phase S Columns is of high purity, which reduces non-specific sample adsorption, increases sample recovery and results in normal peak shapes.

Particle shape is spherical, for best reproducibility, reduction of column back pressure and high mechanical stability.

Small pore size packing has higher surface area for greater sample loading, but may not be ideal for separating large molecules, and the large surface area may result in excessive retention of some analytes of interest. Stock pore sizes are 60, 100 and 300Å, others are available.

Small particle size yields better resolution of analytes, but with higher back-pressure. Particle sizes of 3, 5 and 10 µm are stock, with 5 µm being the most popular.

Irregular shape packings are more inexpensive and are suitable for low pressure large process scale applications. Very small particle size (< 2 µm) is appropriate for UHLPC (Ultra High Pressure Liquid Chromatography), at pressures greater than 10,000 psi. Contact Rose Scientific for more information on these options.
